IELTS Writing Task 2 Question:

Every day, millions of tons of food are wasted all over the world. Why do you think this is happening? And how can we solve this problem?

Sample Band 9 Answer (with Lexical Resource)

Food wastage has become one of the most pressing global issues in today’s world, with millions of tons of edible products discarded every single day. This problem can be attributed to a combination of social, economic, and cultural factors. However, it can be effectively tackled through public awareness, better distribution systems, and government intervention.

One of the primary reasons for this alarming trend is the consumerist mindset in modern societies. In many developed nations, people tend to buy food in bulk due to the convenience offered by supermarkets and discount offers, but much of it ends up spoiling before consumption. Moreover, aesthetic standards imposed by retailers lead to the rejection of perfectly edible food that does not meet the ideal shape or colour. In developing countries, on the other hand, food waste often results from poor storage facilities, lack of infrastructure, and inefficient supply chains, which cause food to rot before reaching the market. Additionally, a general lack of awareness about the value of food contributes to careless disposal habits among consumers.

To address this issue, a multi-pronged approach is required. Governments should launch public education campaigns to promote mindful consumption and highlight the environmental impact of food waste. Retailers and restaurants can play a vital role by donating surplus food to charities or food banks rather than discarding it. Furthermore, investment in cold storage technology and improved transportation systems can minimize post-harvest losses in developing regions. Lastly, stricter laws regarding food labeling and expiry dates can prevent unnecessary disposal of safe-to-eat items.

In conclusion, food wastage is primarily caused by overconsumption, inefficient distribution, and public negligence. By encouraging responsible behavior, enhancing infrastructure, and implementing stricter regulations, this global challenge can be significantly mitigated.

🗣 IELTS Speaking Part 1 (Interview)

🕐 Staying up late

Q: Do you usually stay up late at night?
Not really, but sometimes I do, especially when I’m watching a movie or working on something important. On normal days, I prefer to sleep early so that I can wake up fresh in the morning.

Q: What do you do when you stay up late?
Most of the time, I scroll through social media or watch YouTube videos. Occasionally, if I have an exam or project, I stay up late to finish it.

Q: How do you feel the next morning if you go to bed late?
I usually feel pretty tired and a bit grumpy. My mind doesn’t work as sharply as usual, and I need a strong cup of coffee to kick-start the day.

Q: Did you also stay up late when you were a child?
No, not at all. My parents were quite strict about bedtime, so I had to go to sleep by 9 PM. Back then, I didn’t even think about staying up late.

Q: What activities kept you awake at night when you were younger?
Once in a while, I stayed awake during festivals or family gatherings. I remember staying up late to watch cricket matches with my cousins — those nights were unforgettable!

🏡 Neighbourhood

Q: Where do you live now?
I live in a residential area in the outskirts of the city. It’s a calm and peaceful place with lots of greenery and friendly people around.

Q: Do you like your neighbourhood?
Yes, absolutely. I like the fact that it’s quiet, safe, and has all the necessary facilities nearby — like supermarkets, parks, and gyms.

Q: What kind of people live in your area?
Mostly families and working professionals. Everyone is respectful and helpful, so there’s a real sense of community here.

Q: Would you like to move to another place in the future?
Maybe, yes. In the future, I’d like to move to a bigger city for better career opportunities, but I’d still prefer a peaceful residential area like this one.

🎬 IELTS Speaking Part 2 – Cue Card

Describe an actor or actress you admire

You should say:

  • who the person is

  • what kind of roles they usually play

  • why you admire them

  • and explain how they have impressed you

Sample Answer:

Well, I’d like to talk about Robert Downey Jr., a Hollywood actor I truly admire. He’s best known for his role as Iron Man in the Marvel movies, but his journey as an actor is what really inspires me.

He usually plays strong, confident, and witty characters — the kind of roles that have depth and charisma. What I love about him is how effortlessly he brings his characters to life. Even though he has faced a lot of personal struggles in his early life, he managed to bounce back and rebuild his career, which is really motivating.

I admire him not just for his acting talent but also for his resilience and sense of humor. Whenever I watch his interviews, he comes across as humble and genuine.

He has impressed me with his transformation — from being a struggling actor to becoming one of the most respected figures in Hollywood. His story reminds me that no matter how tough life gets, you can always make a comeback if you’re determined enough.

🎭 IELTS Speaking Part 3 (Discussion)

Q: What are the benefits and drawbacks of being an actor?
The biggest benefit is fame and recognition. Actors can inspire millions and make a great living. But the downside is lack of privacy and constant public scrutiny, which can be stressful and emotionally draining.

Q: Why do some people choose to become actors from a young age?
Some are naturally drawn to performing arts, while others are influenced by media or family support. Nowadays, many young people see acting as a glamorous career with opportunities for fame and creativity.

Q: Do you think acting is a stable career?
Not really. Acting can be unpredictable because success depends on popularity and audience preference. Only a few actors have consistent work, while others may struggle between projects.

Q: How does fame affect the personal lives of actors?
Fame brings recognition, but it also takes away privacy. Many actors find it hard to live a normal life because they’re constantly followed by fans and paparazzi. It can be mentally exhausting.

Q: What role does social media play in the success of actors today?
Social media plays a massive role now. It helps actors connect with their fans and promote their projects. However, it also exposes them to online criticism and pressure to maintain a perfect image.

Q: Do you think acting talent can be developed through training, or is it natural?
I believe it’s a mix of both. Some people are born with natural acting instincts, but proper training can polish those skills and improve techniques like body language, voice modulation, and emotional expression.

🧍‍♂️ IELTS Speaking Part 2

Describe a person who wears unusual clothes

You should say:

  • Who this person is

  • How you know him/her

  • What kind of clothes he/she wears

  • And explain why you think his/her clothes are unusual

Sample Answer:

Well, I’d like to talk about one of my college friends, Rohan, who’s known for his very unique dressing style. I met him during my first year at university, and honestly, he stood out from day one because of his clothes.

Unlike most students who wear casual jeans and T-shirts, Rohan loves experimenting with his outfits. He often wears brightly colored shirts, funky jackets, and sometimes even traditional clothes mixed with modern ones — like a kurta with sneakers! It sounds odd, but somehow it suits his personality.

He also customizes his clothes by painting small designs on them or attaching badges. He says fashion is a way of expressing who he is, and I totally agree with that. Although some people find his style strange, I think it’s actually quite creative and confident of him to dress differently.

So, in my opinion, Rohan’s clothes are unusual but in a very cool and inspiring way.

👔 IELTS Speaking Part 3 — Related to Clothes and Fashion

Q: Why do people like to wear fashionable clothes?
I think fashion helps people express themselves and boost their confidence. Wearing trendy clothes often makes people feel good and stand out in a crowd.

Q: Do clothes reflect a person’s personality?
Yes, to a large extent. For instance, someone who likes bright colors might be outgoing, while someone who wears simple, neutral tones may prefer a more low-key lifestyle.

Q: Why do some people prefer traditional clothes?
Many people wear traditional outfits to stay connected with their culture and heritage. Traditional clothes also make people feel proud of their identity, especially during festivals or family gatherings.

Q: Is it good for people to follow fashion trends?
It depends. Following fashion can be fun, but blindly chasing every trend is unnecessary. It’s better to wear what makes you comfortable and confident rather than what’s popular.

The use of mobile phones and computers for communication has affected our reading and writing skills. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

📝 Sample Answer

In today’s digital era, mobile phones and computers have revolutionized the way people communicate. While these technologies have undeniably made interaction faster and more convenient, many argue that they have negatively impacted our reading and writing abilities. I partly agree with this statement because, although digital tools have weakened traditional literacy habits, they have also created new forms of language proficiency.

On the one hand, the excessive use of smartphones and computers has indeed contributed to a decline in conventional reading and writing skills. People today rarely engage with printed books, newspapers, or long-form articles. Instead, they prefer brief online posts and social media updates, which have shortened their attention spans. For instance, most individuals now read in fragments—scrolling through short captions or tweets rather than reading detailed essays. Moreover, writing habits have also changed; people increasingly rely on autocorrect and predictive text, which reduce the need to spell words correctly or construct grammatically sound sentences independently.

On the other hand, it would be unfair to claim that digital communication has only harmed our literacy skills. In fact, mobile devices and computers have expanded our access to written language in ways that were unimaginable a few decades ago. Millions of people now read online blogs, digital newspapers, and e-books every day. Similarly, writing has become more interactive and diverse—emails, blogs, and online discussions encourage expression, creativity, and cross-cultural communication. For example, professionals and students often use online platforms to share ideas and develop their writing style in real time, which ultimately strengthens their communication skills.

In conclusion, while it is true that the growing dependence on mobile phones and computers has led to a decline in traditional reading and writing habits, these technologies have simultaneously created new opportunities for literacy and expression. Therefore, rather than rejecting digital communication, individuals should learn to use it responsibly to maintain and enhance their reading and writing proficiency.

IELTS Speaking Test – Germany, November 2025

Part 1 – Introduction and Interview

1. What do you like most about your hometown?
What I love most about my hometown is its calm and friendly environment. It’s surrounded by greenery, and people are always ready to lend a hand. There’s a real sense of community that makes life peaceful and comfortable.

2. How long have you been living there?
I’ve been living there since my childhood, so it’s been over twenty years now. Even though I moved away for studies, I still visit quite often because it always feels like home.

3. What would you like to change about your town or city?
If I could change one thing, I’d definitely improve the transport system. The buses are irregular, and that causes inconvenience to daily commuters. I’d also love to see more cafés and recreation areas for young people.

4. What did you want to be when you were a child?
When I was younger, I wanted to become a pilot. I was always fascinated by airplanes and loved the idea of flying high above the clouds.

5. When did you decide on the job or career you have now?
I made that decision during my college years. I realized I was good at technology and problem-solving, so I decided to build a career in the IT field.

6. What would you like to do in the future?
In the future, I’d love to start my own tech company — something related to educational tools or software. It would allow me to combine creativity with practicality.

7. What do you usually do with things that are broken?
It really depends on the item. If it’s something small, like a cable, I try to fix it myself. But for bigger or more technical things, I usually take them to a repair shop.

8. Have you ever repaired something by yourself?
Yes! Once I repaired my phone charger using an online tutorial. It wasn’t perfect, but it worked fine for a few more months. It actually made me feel quite proud.

9. Do you think people should try to repair things instead of replacing them?
Definitely! Repairing items saves both money and the environment. People today often replace things too quickly because it’s convenient, but repairing teaches patience and sustainability.

10. Did your parents ever teach you how to fix or repair things at home?
Yes, my father did. He often involved me when fixing small appliances. Those moments taught me practical life skills and gave me confidence to handle small repairs on my own.

🔹 Vocabulary & Idioms (Part 1)

  • lend a hand – help someone

  • sense of community – feeling of togetherness

  • build a career in – pursue work in a specific field

  • fix it myself – repair without help

  • teaches patience and sustainability – helps develop life values

Part 2 – Cue Card

🎯 Describe one gadget you couldn’t live without.

You should say:
– what the gadget is
– how you use it in your daily life
– why it is important to you
and explain why you feel you couldn’t live without it.

💡 Sample Answer (Extended, Natural Version)

To be honest, the gadget I simply couldn’t live without is my smartphone. These days, it feels more like a part of me than just a device. I use it for almost everything — from setting alarms and checking emails to watching videos and staying in touch with friends and family. I also use it regularly for my IELTS practice on ieltsonestopcbt.com, which really helps me stay consistent with my preparation.

I usually start my day by checking the weather, my messages, and the news on my phone. Throughout the day, it helps me manage work, take notes, and make quick payments. Whenever I’m traveling, I rely on Google Maps for directions, and in my free time, I listen to music or podcasts to unwind.

Of course, I use other gadgets as well — like my laptop for official work and my smartwatch for fitness tracking — but the smartphone connects everything together. It’s like the control center of all my other devices. I can even adjust my earbuds or check my smartwatch through my phone.

The main reason I can’t live without it is that it keeps me organized and connected wherever I go. All my important data, contacts, and documents are stored there. Plus, it helps me stay close to my loved ones who live abroad. Honestly, if I misplace it even for a few minutes, I feel completely lost.

So, in a nutshell, while I do appreciate other gadgets, my smartphone is the one that truly keeps my life running smoothly. It’s not just a tool — it’s my personal assistant, my entertainment source, and my daily companion all rolled into one.

🔑 Vocabulary, Idioms & Phrases

Category Examples
Collocations daily routine, stay connected, control center, manage work, quick payments, personal assistant
Idioms part of me, keeps my life running smoothly, rolled into one, can’t live without, feel completely lost
Phrases rely on it for everything, helps me stay consistent, connect everything together, start my day by
Connectors to be honest, throughout the day, of course, the main reason, honestly, in a nutshell, while I do

Part 3 – Discussion

1. What kind of person do you think makes a good inventor?
I think a good inventor is someone who’s imaginative, curious, and persistent. They need to have a creative mindset to come up with new ideas and the patience to keep trying even when things don’t work out.

2. What qualities or characteristics are important for an inventor to have?
Apart from creativity, they need strong problem-solving skills and a bit of technical knowledge. I’d also say flexibility is key because technology changes so fast, and they must adapt to new tools and trends.

3. Do you think an inventor needs to be a scientist?
Not really. Some of the most successful inventors weren’t scientists by profession — they were just people who thought differently. Of course, having a scientific background helps, but passion and curiosity often matter more than degrees.

4. Should inventions that benefit society be funded by private companies or by the government?
Ideally, both. Governments should support inventions that have social value — like medical or environmental projects — while private companies can invest in commercial innovations that boost the economy. A combination of both ensures balance and progress.

5. How do inventions influence people’s lives?
Inventions make life more convenient, efficient, and enjoyable. Think about smartphones, electric cars, or online learning platforms — they’ve completely transformed how we live and communicate. However, too much dependence on technology can sometimes make people less active or social.

6. What inventions do you think will become important in the future?
I believe renewable energy devices, AI-driven technologies, and medical innovations will dominate the future. For example, wearable health monitors and smart home systems will probably become as common as smartphones today. These inventions will make our lives more sustainable and health-oriented.

  • think differently – be creative or innovative

  • boost the economy – improve financial growth

  • too much dependence – excessive reliance

  • social value – benefit for society
