One of the primary reasons for this alarming trend is the consumerist mindset in modern societies. In many developed nations, people tend to buy food in bulk due to the convenience offered by supermarkets and discount offers, but much of it ends up spoiling before consumption. Moreover, aesthetic standards imposed by retailers lead to the rejection of perfectly edible food that does not meet the ideal shape or colour. In developing countries, on the other hand, food waste often results from poor storage facilities, lack of infrastructure, and inefficient supply chains, which cause food to rot before reaching the market. Additionally, a general lack of awareness about the value of food contributes to careless disposal habits among consumers.

To address this issue, a multi-pronged approach is required. Governments should launch public education campaigns to promote mindful consumption and highlight the environmental impact of food waste. Retailers and restaurants can play a vital role by donating surplus food to charities or food banks rather than discarding it.
