ðŸ—Ģ Part 1 – Interview

Q1. Do you work or are you a student?
I’m currently a student, pursuing my bachelor’s degree in computer science. I’ve always been fascinated by how technology shapes our everyday life, so this field really excites me.

Q2. What subject or topic do you enjoy the most in your studies?
I genuinely enjoy learning about artificial intelligence. It feels amazing to see how machines can actually “learn” and perform tasks like humans.

Q3. Why do you find that topic interesting?
Because it’s the future! AI has endless possibilities — from self-driving cars to voice assistants. It keeps me curious and motivated to stay updated.

Q4. What do you plan to do after you complete your studies?
After graduation, I’m planning to work as a data analyst or AI developer. Eventually, I want to build something innovative that can make daily life easier for people.

Q5. Are you good at repairing or fixing things?
Not really! I’m not very handy, but I do try to fix small issues like a loose phone cable or a computer glitch before asking for help.

Q6. Do you know anyone who is particularly good at fixing things?
Yes, my uncle is extremely good at it. He can repair almost anything — from cars to household appliances. He’s like the go-to person in our family.

Q7. What kinds of things do you usually try to fix yourself?
Mostly electronic gadgets. If my laptop or phone starts acting up, I watch YouTube tutorials and try to sort it out on my own.

Q8. Do you prefer to repair things or replace them with new ones?
I usually prefer repairing first because it saves money and is better for the environment. But if something is completely worn out, replacing it makes more sense.

ðŸŽŊ Part 2 – Cue Card

Describe a memorable experience from your childhood.

You should say:
– what the experience was
– when and where it happened
– who was there with you
– and explain why it is still memorable for you.

Sample Answer:
One of the most memorable experiences from my childhood was when I participated in a school annual play for the very first time. It happened when I was around 10 years old, in my primary school back in my hometown.

I played the role of a king in a historical drama, and all my classmates were part of the performance. My parents and teachers were present in the audience, which made the moment even more special. I still remember feeling extremely nervous before stepping onto the stage, but once the lights turned on, I forgot my fear and performed confidently.

When the play ended, everyone clapped loudly, and my teacher even praised me in front of the entire school. That appreciation made me feel on top of the world.

This experience is still close to my heart because it boosted my self-confidence and helped me overcome stage fright. It taught me that stepping out of my comfort zone can bring amazing rewards. Even today, whenever I have to speak publicly, I recall that moment, and it gives me courage.

💎 Part 3 – Discussion

Q1. Why do people tend to remember certain experiences more than others?
People usually remember experiences that are emotionally powerful — either very happy or very sad moments. Strong emotions leave a lasting impression on our minds, almost like mental photographs.

Q2. How can memories influence a person’s behaviour or decisions?
Memories shape who we are. For example, if someone had a bad experience with public speaking, they might feel anxious in similar situations later. On the other hand, positive memories can inspire confidence and motivation.

Q3. Do you think people’s memories of childhood are always accurate?
Not always. Over time, our brain tends to fill in the gaps, and sometimes we mix real events with imagination. So, childhood memories can be a blend of truth and perception.

Q4. How has modern technology affected the way we store and recall memories?
Technology has completely changed it. Nowadays, people capture almost every moment with phones or cameras instead of relying on memory. While it helps preserve details, it sometimes makes us less present in the actual moment.

Q5. Is it important for older people to share their memories with younger generations?
Definitely yes. Older people’s stories are full of wisdom and life lessons. Sharing memories connects generations and keeps traditions alive.

Q6. Why do some people find it easier to remember positive experiences than negative ones?
I think it’s because humans naturally try to protect their emotional well-being. Remembering happy times helps us stay optimistic, while forgetting unpleasant ones makes life less stressful.

🌟 Useful Vocabulary & Idioms:

  • “Feel on top of the world” → feel extremely happy

  • “Step out of my comfort zone” → try something challenging

  • “Left a lasting impression” → something unforgettable

  • “Blend of truth and imagination” → partly real, partly imagined

  • “Keep traditions alive” → preserve culture and values

  • What was the gift

  • Whom you wanted to gift

  • How much you spent on the gift

  • And explain why you decided to give this gift

Sample Answer:

Well, I’d like to talk about an expensive gift that I gave to my elder brother on his 25th birthday. It was a smartwatch that I had been planning to buy for him for quite a long time.

My brother has always been a fitness enthusiast and loves tracking his workouts and daily steps. So, I thought a smartwatch would be a perfect blend of technology and utility for him. After doing some research online, I decided to purchase a premium smartwatch from a reputed brand. It cost me around 20,000 rupees, which was quite expensive for me as I’m still a student.

To afford it, I saved a portion of my pocket money and earnings from part-time tutoring for almost two months. When I finally gave it to him, he was genuinely surprised and overjoyed. He immediately wore it and started exploring its features. I could see a big smile on his face, and that moment truly made me feel proud and content.

I gifted it not just because of the occasion, but also because my brother has always supported me in every phase of life. I wanted to express my gratitude in a meaningful way, and this watch was my way of saying thank you.

So overall, this gift was special to me—not because of its price, but because it symbolized my love and appreciation for my brother.

Question:

These days, many films and pieces of music are free online.
Is this a positive or negative development?
Write your reasons and use examples from your experience.

Band 7.5–8 Sample Answer:

In recent years, the internet has made it possible for people to access films and music without paying for them. While this trend has made entertainment more affordable and widespread, it also raises concerns about copyright violations and the sustainability of the creative industry. In my opinion, although there are some benefits, this is largely a negative development.

On the positive side, the availability of free online content allows people from all backgrounds to enjoy music and movies without financial barriers. For example, students or low-income individuals can still watch films or listen to songs, which can be a great source of relaxation and cultural exposure. Moreover, many emerging artists upload their work online for free to gain recognition and build an audience. In this way, the internet provides a democratic platform for both creators and audiences.

However, the disadvantages outweigh these benefits. The major issue is copyright infringement, as much of this free content is often uploaded illegally. This not only causes financial losses for artists, producers, and record companies but also discourages creativity. When creators do not receive fair payment for their work, they may lose motivation to produce quality content. Additionally, easy access to free entertainment can lead to overconsumption and reduced productivity, especially among young people who may spend hours watching movies or listening to music instead of focusing on studies or work.

In conclusion, although free access to films and music online makes entertainment more inclusive and promotes new talent, it is mostly a negative development because it harms the creative industry and encourages irresponsible usage. Therefore, stricter laws and more awareness about supporting original creators are necessary to maintain a fair digital environment.

Useful Vocabulary & Phrases

Word / Phrase Meaning / Use
Copyright infringement Illegal use of creative work
Financial losses Reduction in income or profit
Democratic platform Equal opportunity space for everyone
Discourages creativity Reduces motivation to create
Overconsumption Using or consuming excessively
Inclusive Open and accessible to everyone
Sustainability of the creative industry Ability of artists to continue creating long-term
Fair digital environment Online space that supports legal and ethical use

Question:

These days children spend more and more time on technical gadgets such as smartphones, computers for studies, entertainment and other tasks. Do advantages outweigh disadvantages?

Sample Answer:

In the modern world, technology has become an inseparable part of daily life, and children are no exception. They spend a considerable amount of time using gadgets like smartphones and computers for both academic and recreational purposes. Although this habit has certain downsides, I strongly believe that its advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.

On the negative side, overreliance on gadgets can lead to several physical and psychological issues. Prolonged screen exposure often results in eye strain, headaches, and a sedentary lifestyle, which can cause obesity at a young age. Moreover, many children tend to get glued to their screens, limiting real-world social interactions and emotional growth. This over-dependence sometimes makes them less patient and more distracted, which can hamper their academic performance. In addition, the internet can expose youngsters to cyberbullying or harmful content if not properly monitored.

Nevertheless, the positive aspects of gadget use are undeniably significant. To begin with, digital tools have revolutionized education by making learning more interactive and engaging. Platforms such as educational apps, online lectures, and virtual classrooms allow children to learn at their own pace and explore subjects beyond the school curriculum. Furthermore, developing digital literacy from an early age equips them with essential skills for future careers in this technology-driven era. Beyond academics, gadgets also stimulate creativity—children can learn to code, edit videos, or design graphics, which may later turn into promising career paths. Therefore, when used under proper supervision, gadgets can act as powerful instruments of learning and innovation.

In conclusion, while excessive screen time may have negative implications for children’s health and social development, the educational and creative benefits clearly outweigh these concerns. With parental guidance and balanced use, technology can serve as a stepping stone toward intellectual and personal growth.

✨ Useful Vocabulary & Phrases:

Word / Phrase Meaning / Usage
Inseparable part Something that cannot be separated from daily life
Recreational purposes For fun or entertainment

Well, I’d really love to watch a live cricket match, especially an India vs. Pakistan game. I remember talking about this with my friends just a few days ago, when we were discussing the ongoing World Cup. Being a die-hard cricket fan, it’s been my dream to witness such an intense match in person.

If I ever get a chance, I’d definitely go with my close friends because we all share the same level of enthusiasm for cricket. Watching it together would make the experience even more exciting — cheering for Team India, waving flags, and feeling the adrenaline rush in the stadium would be unforgettable.

The main reason I want to watch this event live is because of the electric atmosphere that you simply can’t experience on television. The crowd’s energy, the national anthems, and every boundary or wicket bring goosebumps. I’ve seen these moments on TV many times, but being physically present in the stadium would be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

You should say:

  • Where was it?

  • How did others react to it?

  • And explain how you felt about it.

Sample Answer:

Well, I vividly remember an incident that happened quite recently, on 15th October, when I was in Anand, Gujarat. I had gone to a popular cafÃĐ called “Chai Point” with one of my friends to spend some time and grab a cup of tea. While we were chatting, a group of around four to five children, probably between the ages of 8 and 10, came in with their parents.

At first, everything seemed fine, but within a few minutes, the kids started running around the cafÃĐ, shouting loudly, and even playing with the sugar packets and cutlery on the tables. One of them accidentally spilled water on the floor, and another started throwing tissue papers around. It was absolute chaos! Their parents were busy scrolling through their phones and barely paid any attention to what was happening.

The other customers looked quite annoyed and uncomfortable. A few people even complained to the staff, who politely asked the parents to control their children. Unfortunately, the parents just gave a quick smile and didn’t really take it seriously. Eventually, one of the staff members had to clean up the mess while the kids continued laughing and running around.

To be honest, I felt really disappointed watching that scene. I believe that children can be playful, but there’s a time and place for everything. It was embarrassing not only for the parents but also for others around them. I felt that the parents should have guided them about good manners in public places. That day made me realize how important it is for children to learn discipline and respect for others at a young age.

Describe a skill that you can teach other people
You should say:

  • What it is

  • When you learned it

  • How you can teach others

  • How you feel about this skill

Sample Answer

I’d like to talk about a skill that I can teach others, which is 3D origami. It’s a form of paper art where small folded pieces are assembled together to create beautiful 3D shapes like swans, vases, or even airplanes.

A few years ago, during the Covid lockdown, I had plenty of free time at home. My mother had learned 3D origami from the internet earlier and made some stunning decorations for our living room. I was fascinated by them, so I asked her to teach me this craft. At first, it looked complicated because it requires folding hundreds of small paper triangles and connecting them precisely. However, after a few weeks of practice, I started getting the hang of it.

If I were to teach someone this skill, I’d start by showing them how to cut and fold the paper pieces properly. Then, I’d explain how to assemble them by inserting one piece into another to give them a specific shape. I would also encourage them to be patient and consistent because the process can be time-consuming at the beginning. To make it easier, I’d suggest watching some YouTube tutorials that provide creative design ideas.

I feel genuinely proud of this skill because it’s both creative and relaxing. It has taught me the value of patience and attention to detail. Nowadays, I’ve even started designing my own models, and when my friends see my creations, they often ask me to teach them too. It’s such a rewarding experience to share something artistic and handmade.

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to express my excitement about your upcoming documentary project in my hometown, Amritsar, and to share a few suggestions that might help you capture the true essence of this city.

To begin with, I would highly recommend shooting at the Golden Temple, which is not only an architectural masterpiece but also a symbol of peace and spirituality. The temple’s golden façade reflecting in the holy pond provides a breathtaking view, especially during sunrise. Another captivating spot is the Wagah Border, where the evening flag-lowering ceremony showcases the patriotic spirit and unity between India and Pakistan.

Question:
Some people say that all full-time workers should get equal holidays, while others say that they should have a different number of holidays according to their job.
Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Sample Answer:

There is an ongoing debate about whether all full-time employees should receive the same number of holidays or if the duration should vary depending on the type of work they do. While equal holidays promote fairness and balance, I believe that holiday entitlement should depend on the nature and demands of the job.

On the one hand, many argue that giving all full-time workers an equal number of holidays ensures equality and avoids workplace discrimination. When every employee, regardless of their role, receives the same vacation time, it helps maintain harmony and prevents resentment among staff. Furthermore, holidays are essential for physical and mental well-being, and all workers deserve sufficient rest to recharge, irrespective of their occupation. For instance, office staff and factory workers alike experience stress in different forms, so providing equal time off can contribute to better productivity and job satisfaction.

On the other hand, others believe that holiday entitlements should vary depending on the workload and stress level associated with a job. Certain professions, such as healthcare workers, teachers, and emergency service providers, involve higher mental strain and longer working hours compared to others. Therefore, it is reasonable that they receive more holidays to recover and maintain efficiency. Moreover, some jobs require continuous physical activity, while others involve sedentary desk work, which means their fatigue levels differ. Offering different numbers of holidays based on job demands ensures a more balanced and practical approach to employee well-being.

In my opinion, while equality in benefits is important, holiday distribution should be flexible and based on job intensity. A one-size-fits-all policy may appear fair on the surface but could ignore the specific needs of demanding professions. Therefore, a fairer system would be to assess working conditions and assign holidays accordingly.

Conclusion:
In conclusion, although giving all workers the same number of holidays promotes fairness, it is more logical to allocate holiday time based on the nature of the job and the level of effort required. This approach ensures both fairness and practicality in the workplace.

Band 8 Vocabulary:

  • Ongoing debate

  • Workplace discrimination

  • Mental well-being

  • Recharge and rejuvenate

  • Entitlement

  • Workload and stress level

  • Mental strain

  • Sedentary desk work

  • One-size-fits-all policy

  • Job intensity

Question:
Children are experiencing increasing educational, social, and commercial pressure.
What are the causes?
What measures do you think can be taken to reduce them?

Sample Answer:

In today’s competitive world, children are under mounting pressure from various aspects of life, including education, social expectations, and commercial influence. This essay will discuss the main causes behind this growing stress and suggest practical measures to alleviate it.

One of the major reasons for educational pressure is the increasing competition in academic performance. Parents often expect their children to achieve top grades and secure prestigious jobs in the future, which leads to excessive tutoring and lack of leisure time. Furthermore, schools have become more exam-oriented, emphasizing results over creativity and personal growth. Socially, children face pressure to fit in with peers, particularly through social media, where unrealistic standards of beauty, success, and lifestyle dominate. On the commercial side, advertising companies aggressively target children, making them desire branded products and gadgets, which not only strains family finances but also breeds materialistic attitudes.

To mitigate these issues, a multifaceted approach is required. Firstly, schools should adopt a more holistic education system that encourages creativity, sports, and emotional well-being rather than focusing solely on grades. Parents must also play a vital role by setting realistic expectations and allowing their children time to relax and explore their interests. Moreover, stricter regulations should be imposed on advertisements directed at children, especially those promoting unhealthy products or luxury brands. Governments and schools can also conduct awareness campaigns to educate parents and children about the negative effects of excessive social media use and consumerism.

In conclusion, the growing academic, social, and commercial pressure on children stems mainly from parental expectations, competitive schooling, and media influence. However, with balanced education policies, responsible parenting, and stronger advertising controls, this stress can be significantly reduced, ensuring a healthier and happier childhood.

Band 8 Vocabulary:

  • Mounting pressure

  • Academic performance

  • Prestigious jobs

  • Exam-oriented education

  • Materialistic attitudes

  • Holistic education

  • Emotional well-being

  • Realistic expectations

  • Consumerism

  • Stricter regulations

Question:

Your manager assigned you a task to repair equipment that had a problem at your workplace.
Write a letter to the local engineer. In your letter,

  • describe the problem with the equipment

  • explain why the machine is important (how it affects your work)

  • say what is the best time to call them

Sample Answer:

Dear Mr. Sharma,

I am writing to request your urgent assistance in repairing one of our office printers that has recently stopped functioning properly.

The printer, a Canon LaserJet model LBP2900, has been showing repeated paper jam errors, and it often shuts down unexpectedly in the middle of printing. Despite cleaning and restarting it several times, the problem persists and seems to have worsened over the last few days.

This machine is crucial for our daily operations as we use it to print customer invoices and internal reports. Since it stopped working, our team has been facing significant delays, and manual documentation has become time-consuming and inefficient.

It would be convenient if you could visit our office between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. on weekdays, as our technical department will be available then to assist you and provide access to the maintenance room. Please let me know if that time suits you, or suggest another slot at your convenience.

Thank you in advance for your quick support. I look forward to your response.

Yours sincerely,
Ravi Mehta

Question:

Some people think that it is necessary to travel abroad to learn about other countries, but others think that it is not necessary to travel abroad because all the information can be seen on TV and the internet.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

Sample Answer:

In this era of globalization and digital advancement, learning about foreign countries has become easier than ever before. While some argue that traveling abroad is essential to gain real insight into other cultures, others believe that the internet and television provide sufficient knowledge without the need for physical travel. This essay will discuss both perspectives before stating my own view that firsthand travel offers a deeper and more authentic understanding.

On one hand, the availability of technology has revolutionized how people learn about the world. Through documentaries, travel blogs, and virtual tours, individuals can explore various aspects of different nations from the comfort of their homes. For example, platforms such as YouTube and National Geographic allow viewers to observe local traditions, cuisine, and history with high-quality visuals and expert commentary. Moreover, online forums and social media platforms make it possible to interact directly with people from other cultures, fostering cross-cultural communication without the cost and inconvenience of traveling. Therefore, for many, the digital world provides an affordable and accessible way to expand global awareness.

On the other hand, traveling abroad provides experiences that cannot be replicated through a screen. Immersing oneself in a new environment allows for direct interaction with local people, language, and lifestyle. This not only enhances cultural understanding but also builds empathy and adaptability. For instance, visiting Japan and witnessing its social etiquette or participating in local festivals can leave lasting impressions that online content cannot convey. Additionally, travel allows individuals to challenge stereotypes and form personal interpretations based on real-life observations. Hence, physical travel fosters a more comprehensive and emotional connection with the world.

In my opinion, while technology offers convenient exposure to global cultures, it cannot replace the depth of experience gained through actual travel. Virtual media can inform, but traveling can transform — it engages the senses, emotions, and personal growth in ways that digital learning cannot.

In conclusion, both traveling abroad and using digital media are valuable means of learning about other countries. However, experiencing foreign cultures in person provides more profound and memorable insights, making it the superior method of cultural exploration.

Question:

Some people believe that educating children at home provides more benefits than sending them to school.
Do the advantages of home-schooling outweigh the disadvantages?

Sample Answer:

Education plays a crucial role in shaping an individual’s personality and future prospects. While some people argue that teaching children at home is more beneficial than traditional schooling, I believe that although home-schooling has a few merits, the drawbacks far outweigh them.

On the one hand, home-schooling offers certain notable advantages. Firstly, it allows parents to provide personalised attention to their children, focusing on their strengths and weaknesses. For example, a child who struggles with mathematics can receive one-on-one guidance without the distractions commonly found in classrooms. Secondly, home-schooling provides flexibility in learning pace and schedule, which helps children learn comfortably without academic pressure. Moreover, it protects children from negative peer influence or bullying, which can sometimes affect their emotional well-being in conventional schools.

On the other hand, the disadvantages of home-schooling are far more significant. One major concern is the lack of social interaction, as children studying at home have fewer opportunities to develop interpersonal and teamwork skills. These skills are crucial for future academic and professional success. In addition, parents may not possess the pedagogical expertise or subject knowledge required to teach effectively, resulting in limited learning outcomes. Furthermore, traditional schools offer access to extracurricular activities, laboratories, and sports facilities that contribute to a child’s holistic development, which home-schooling cannot replicate.

In conclusion, although home-schooling offers flexibility and personalised attention, it fails to provide the essential social and developmental experiences that schools ensure. Therefore, I strongly believe that the disadvantages of home-schooling clearly outweigh its advantages.
