Question

Nowadays many people travel to foreign countries for pleasure. Some believe this travel has a negative impact on the countries travelled to. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Sample Answer

In recent years, international tourism has become increasingly popular as people seek leisure and cultural experiences abroad. While some argue that this trend harms the host countries, I believe that the positive effects of tourism outweigh its drawbacks.

On the one hand, there are undeniable concerns about the negative consequences of mass tourism. First, it can place immense pressure on the local environment. For instance, destinations such as Bali or Venice suffer from overcrowding, littering, and damage to historical sites due to the influx of tourists. Additionally, tourism sometimes disrupts local lifestyles. Traditional cultures may become commercialised, and local residents may face rising living costs because of the demand for accommodation and services. These issues suggest that tourism is not always beneficial.

On the other hand, I firmly believe that the advantages of foreign travel are far more significant. Tourism is a powerful driver of economic growth, providing jobs for local communities in sectors like hospitality, transport, and entertainment. For example, in Thailand, tourism is one of the main sources of income for thousands of families. Moreover, international visitors bring cultural exchange, allowing both tourists and locals to broaden their perspectives and appreciate diversity. This fosters mutual understanding and global harmony, which is essential in today’s interconnected world. Furthermore, the revenue generated from tourism can be invested in infrastructure, healthcare, and education, directly improving living standards in host countries.

In conclusion, although foreign travel may create environmental and social challenges, I believe that its economic and cultural benefits are far greater. With proper regulations and sustainable practices, tourism can continue to bring prosperity and cross-cultural understanding to the countries involved.
