📌 IELTS Writing Task 2 Essay
Question:
Maintaining public libraries is a waste of money since computer technology is now replacing their functions. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
✍️ Sample Answer:
With the rapid advancement of technology, some argue that public libraries have become obsolete and continuing to fund them is a waste of resources. While it is true that computers and the internet provide easy access to information, I strongly disagree with this view as libraries still play a vital role in education, community development, and preserving culture.
On the one hand, digital technology has undoubtedly revolutionised the way people access information. Nowadays, almost every book, article, and research paper can be found online within seconds. This convenience has significantly reduced the number of people visiting libraries. Furthermore, maintaining public libraries requires considerable expenditure for staffing, utilities, and regular updates to their collections, which some believe could be better spent on modernising digital infrastructure. Therefore, critics argue that in the age of the internet, investing in libraries is no longer justifiable.
On the other hand, there are compelling reasons why libraries are still worth maintaining. Firstly, libraries provide free access to information and resources for everyone, including those who cannot afford computers or internet connections. This helps bridge the digital divide and ensures equal opportunities for education. Secondly, libraries offer a quiet and focused environment that encourages reading and learning, which is often hard to replicate at home due to distractions. In addition, they serve as community centres where people can attend educational workshops, cultural events, and social activities, thereby fostering a sense of belonging. Finally, libraries preserve historical documents and rare books that may not be available in digital form, safeguarding cultural heritage for future generations.
In conclusion, although modern technology has changed the way people access information, public libraries continue to provide valuable services that technology alone cannot fully replace. Therefore, I believe that maintaining libraries remains a worthwhile investment for society.
