🔶 Question

Today, news plays a crucial role in people's lives, and it influences people more significantly than before.
Why is this the case?
Is it a positive or negative development?:

In today’s digital age, news has become an integral part of our daily lives and its influence on the general public is more profound than ever before. This essay will explore the reasons behind this growing impact and argue that this is a highly positive development for both individuals and society as a whole.
There are several reasons why news today holds more influence than it did in the past. Firstly, the advancement of technology has made news readily accessible to almost everyone. With the rise of smartphones, social media, and news apps, people are constantly exposed to updates, regardless of time or location. Secondly, the engaging and interactive formats of news—such as short videos, reels, and infographics—grab more attention compared to traditional newspapers. Moreover, news is now often tailored to personal interests through algorithm-based platforms like YouTube or Twitter, which makes individuals more likely to read or watch content that aligns with their views. This constant and personalized exposure has significantly amplified the influence of news on people’s thoughts, opinions, and decisions.

This increasing influence of news is undoubtedly a positive development. Firstly, it empowers people with up-to-date knowledge about local and global issues, enabling them to make informed decisions in their personal and professional lives. For instance, during a health emergency like the COVID-19 pandemic, timely and accurate news helped people follow safety measures and protect themselves. Secondly, a well-informed public is more likely to participate in civic activities such as voting, volunteering, or supporting social causes, which strengthens democracy. Additionally, exposure to news fosters critical thinking and global awareness, which are vital in today’s interconnected world.

In conclusion, the growing influence of news can be attributed to technological progress and the personalized nature of modern media platforms. This is a positive trend that leads to a more informed, aware, and active society.

Describe a place you went to where the air was not fresh. | Real exam ielts speaking cue cards | may to august 2025 | New cue cards 2025 |

🟨 Cue Card

Describe a place you went to where the air was not fresh.
You should say:

  • Where the place was

  • When you went there

  • What the air was like

  • And explain how you felt about being there

✅ Sample Answer:

Honestly speaking, I love being close to nature and breathing fresh air, but there was one time I visited a place where the air quality was extremely poor. It was during a trip to Delhi last winter — I went there to attend a seminar and also catch up with a few friends who live in the city.

I remember it clearly because as soon as I stepped outside the railway station, I could literally see a thick layer of smog covering the whole sky. The visibility was low, and there was a strong, unpleasant smell in the air — kind of like burnt plastic or chemicals. It immediately made my throat feel dry, and even breathing became a little uncomfortable.

Throughout my stay, I noticed that many people were wearing masks, not just because of COVID, but also due to pollution. I even checked the AQI (Air Quality Index), and it was marked in the “hazardous” category — above 400!

To be honest, I felt quite uneasy and a little worried about my health. I cut my trip short by a day because I couldn’t handle the environment. It made me realize how serious air pollution can be, especially in urban cities during winter due to vehicle emissions, industrial waste, and crop burning.

So all in all, it was a memorable visit, but for all the wrong reasons. I came back home with a new appreciation for the clean, fresh air we often take for granted in smaller towns.

💬 Vocabulary:

  • Smog – a mix of smoke and fog caused by pollution

  • AQI (Air Quality Index) – a measure of how polluted the air is

  • Hazardous – dangerous or harmful

  • Unpleasant – not enjoyable or comfortable

  • Emissions – gases released by vehicles or factories

🧠 Idioms & Phrases:

  • Thick layer of smog – very heavy pollution

  • Take for granted – not value something because it’s always there

  • Cut my trip short – end the trip earlier than planned

  • Made my throat feel dry – affected my breathing

  • For all the wrong reasons – not in a good way

🔗 Connectors:

Describe a time when you were late for an appointment. | Real exam ielts speaking cue cards | may to august 2025 | New cue cards 2025 |

🟨 Cue Card

Describe a time when you were late for an appointment.
You should say:

  • When it happened

  • Where you were supposed to go

  • Why you were late

  • And explain how you felt about it

✅ Sample Answer:

Honestly speaking, I usually try my best to be punctual, but there was one time when I ended up being late for an important appointment — and I still remember it quite clearly. It happened around six months ago when I had a job interview scheduled in Chandigarh at 10 AM.

I had prepared everything the night before — my documents, outfit, and even my route — so I wouldn’t face any issues. But on the morning of the interview, things didn’t go as planned. First of all, my alarm didn’t ring because I accidentally set it for PM instead of AM. I woke up with a jolt at around 8:30, and by the time I got ready and left, it was already cutting it close.

To make things worse, there was unexpected traffic on the highway due to an accident, and my cab got stuck for nearly 40 minutes. I was constantly checking the time and informing the HR person, but I still ended up reaching about 20 minutes late.

To be honest, I felt extremely anxious and disappointed in myself. Even though the company was understanding and allowed me to continue with the interview, I kept feeling like I had already made a bad impression. That experience really taught me the value of double-checking everything — especially my alarm clock!

So all in all, it was quite a stressful experience, but also a lesson in time management and staying calm in pressure situations.

  • Made a bad impression – didn’t come across well to others

IELTS Speaking — Saudi Arabia, July 2025

🗣️ Part 1: Interview Questions & Longer Sample Answers

🔷 What is your full name?

My full name is [Your Name]. It’s the name given to me by my parents, and it has a special meaning in my culture. Most people, including my friends and colleagues, just call me by my first name because it’s easy and more informal.

🔷 Do you work or study?

At the moment, I’m a full-time student pursuing my bachelor’s degree in business administration. I chose this field because I’ve always been interested in how companies operate, and I’d like to develop the skills needed to run my own business one day. Being a student allows me to focus on learning and exploring different areas of management, which is something I truly enjoy.

🔷 Do you often go to the library?

Yes, I try to visit the library at least once or twice a week. I really like the peaceful and quiet atmosphere there, which helps me concentrate better than at home. I usually go there to find books that aren’t available online, prepare for presentations, or sometimes just read for leisure. It’s also a good place to study with friends because it keeps us focused.

🔷 How often do children in your country go to the library?

In my country, children don’t go to the library very often compared to students in schools and universities. Most young children prefer watching videos or playing games at home. However, some schools encourage library visits by organizing reading hours or competitions, which is a great way to build good reading habits.

🔷 When was the last time you visited a library?

The last time I visited the library was about two weeks ago. I had to work on a group project for my marketing class, and we decided to meet at the library to gather reference books and brainstorm ideas. I also borrowed a book on leadership skills, which turned out to be quite helpful.

🔷 Do you like chocolate?

Absolutely! I’ve loved chocolate ever since I was a child. I enjoy all kinds of chocolate—dark, milk, and even white chocolate. There’s something so comforting about it, and it’s my go-to treat when I’m feeling stressed or celebrating something.

🔷 Why is chocolate so popular around the world?

I think it’s because chocolate is so versatile and universally appealing. It has a rich, sweet flavor that almost everyone enjoys, and it can be used in so many forms — as a bar, in desserts, in drinks, or even as a gift. It also has emotional value because people associate it with love, comfort, and celebrations.

🔷 Do people in your country often give chocolate as a gift?

Yes, definitely. Chocolate is a very popular gift choice in my country, especially during festivals, weddings, and when visiting friends or family. It’s easy to buy, beautifully packaged, and almost everyone appreciates it, which makes it a perfect token of affection or gratitude.

🗨️ Part 2: Cue Card

🎯 Describe a free-time activity that you enjoyed doing when you were younger.

You should say:

  • what the activity was

  • where and when you did it

  • who you did it with

  • and explain why you enjoyed doing it.

✅ Sample Answer:

Honestly speaking, one of my favorite free-time activities when I was younger was flying kites.

I started flying kites when I was around 9 or 10 years old, and it quickly became my weekend tradition, especially during spring and early summer. There was a big open field near my grandparents’ house where all the neighborhood kids and even some adults used to gather. It was a place full of laughter and friendly competition.

I usually went there with my cousins and some close friends. We would spend hours preparing for the day — buying colorful kite paper, cutting and gluing the frames, and choosing the strongest thread we could find. The best part was decorating our kites with designs and sometimes even writing our names on them to make them stand out.

On the field, we competed to see who could fly their kite the highest and for the longest time. I still remember the thrill of feeling the string tighten in my hands as the wind lifted the kite higher into the sky. Sometimes we would even try to cut each other’s kites with sharp threads, which added an extra level of excitement.

I really enjoyed this activity because it was fun, social, and gave me a sense of accomplishment. It also taught me patience and teamwork, since making and flying a kite properly takes some practice and skill. Looking back, it was such a simple yet meaningful part of my childhood that I will always cherish.

🗨️ Part 3: Discussion Questions & Longer Sample Answers

🔷 Is it important for children to have frequent breaks at school?

Yes, I believe it’s very important for children to have regular breaks during the school day. Young minds can’t concentrate for long periods of time, and frequent breaks help them recharge and stay focused when they return to class. Breaks also give children the chance to interact socially, move around, and even release some of their energy, which improves their overall learning experience.

🔷 How do children in your country usually spend their free time?

In my country, children spend their free time in a variety of ways. Many younger kids enjoy playing outdoor games like cricket, football, or tag. Older children often spend more time indoors watching TV, playing video games, or using their smartphones. Some parents also enroll their kids in extracurricular activities like music lessons, dance classes, or sports coaching.

🔷 Do you think children today have less free time than in the past?

Yes, absolutely. I think children today have much less free time compared to when I was younger. Nowadays, schools give more homework, and many children attend extra classes or coaching after school. On top of that, the amount of screen time they spend also limits their opportunities for free outdoor play. In the past, kids had more freedom to simply play outside and be creative.

🔷 What role do parents play in organising their children’s free-time activities?

Parents play a crucial role in this. They decide what activities are safe and appropriate for their children. They also enroll them in structured hobbies like sports or art classes and sometimes even plan family outings to parks or other recreational places. Parents can guide their children toward healthy, productive ways to use their free time instead of just spending hours on gadgets.

🔷 Should schools include more leisure-based activities in their daily timetable?

Yes, definitely. I feel schools should balance academics with leisure-based activities like sports, arts, and cultural events. These activities help students relax, develop creative and social skills, and improve their mental health. It makes the school environment more enjoyable and less stressful.

🔷 How does free time affect a child’s development?

Free time is extremely important for a child’s development. It gives them the opportunity to explore their interests, be creative, and develop problem-solving and social skills. Free time also helps children become more independent and emotionally resilient, which are essential qualities as they grow up.

Describe a popular place for sports that you’ve been to

✅ Sample Answer:

Honestly speaking, one of the most popular places for sports that I’ve visited is the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) Stadium in Mohali, near Chandigarh.

I went there about two years ago to watch a live cricket match between India and Australia. It was an international one-day match, and I went with my cousins because all of us are huge cricket fans. We booked the tickets weeks in advance, and I still remember how excited we all were as the day approached.

When we arrived at the stadium, I was amazed by how massive it was. The stands were packed with thousands of enthusiastic fans, all dressed in team jerseys and waving flags. The atmosphere was electrifying — people were cheering, chanting, and even dancing whenever a boundary or six was hit. The ground itself was immaculately maintained, and watching the players live instead of on television was a completely different experience.

During the match, we shouted slogans, waved flags, and even took part in a Mexican wave that went around the whole stadium several times. It was not just about watching the game — it was about being part of a crowd that shared the same passion and energy.

I felt thrilled and proud to be in such a world-class stadium, cheering for my team. It’s one of the most memorable experiences of my life, and I hope to visit the PCA stadium again soon for another match.

So all in all, it was an unforgettable experience, and it made me appreciate how sports bring people together.
