IELTS Writing Task 2 Question
It is more important to hear positive news reports about environmental issues than negative news.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Environmental reporting has become increasingly influential in shaping public awareness. While some people believe that positive environmental news is more important than negative reports, I partly agree with this view. In my opinion, both types of news play essential but different roles in educating and motivating society.
To begin with, positive environmental news can significantly encourage people to adopt sustainable behaviour. Reports about successful recycling initiatives, renewable-energy projects, and improvements in pollution levels help maintain public optimism. When individuals see that progress is achievable, they feel more motivated to contribute. Furthermore, continuous exposure to alarming or negative news can lead to climate fatigue, causing people to withdraw emotionally and stop taking environmental issues seriously. Therefore, positive stories are crucial for strengthening public morale and promoting continued engagement.
However, negative news remains equally important because it highlights the seriousness of the environmental crisis. Reports on rising sea levels, deforestation, and plastic pollution create a sense of urgency that cannot be ignored. These warnings act as a wake-up call, pushing governments to implement stricter environmental policies and encouraging individuals to reconsider harmful lifestyle choices. If the media only reported positive stories, people might become complacent and assume that environmental problems are already under control, which is far from the truth.
In conclusion, while positive environmental news motivates people and provides hope, negative reports reveal the scale of the problem and stimulate urgent action. Therefore, I believe that a balanced combination of both is necessary for promoting long-term environmental protection.
