Some young people’s behaviour changes because of their peers’ attitude. This is called peer pressure. Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

✍️ Sample Answer

Peer pressure is a common phenomenon, especially among teenagers and young adults, where their choices and behaviours are influenced by the people around them. While it can sometimes lead to positive habits, I personally believe that the disadvantages of peer pressure are far greater than the advantages.

On the one hand, there are a few benefits of peer pressure. Young people often get motivated when they see their friends performing well. For example, a student who is surrounded by hardworking classmates may feel encouraged to study more seriously in order to achieve good grades. Similarly, positive peer groups can promote healthy lifestyles by discouraging smoking or encouraging participation in sports. In this way, peer influence can help young people to adopt good practices that they might not have chosen on their own.

On the other hand, the negative impacts are much stronger and more common. Many youngsters feel forced to follow their peers in order to fit in, even if the behaviour is harmful. For instance, some may start smoking, drinking alcohol, or skipping classes just because their friends are doing the same. This can damage both their health and academic performance. Moreover, peer pressure can take away individuality, as teenagers often copy others instead of developing their own personality and values. In the long term, this lack of independent thinking can affect their confidence and decision-making skills.

In conclusion, although peer pressure may sometimes push young people towards positive habits, its negative consequences such as bad habits, loss of individuality, and poor choices are more damaging. Therefore, I believe the disadvantages clearly outweigh the advantages.
