Nowadays, many children spend more time playing computer games rather than engaging in physical activities. What problems does this cause? Do you think this is a positive or negative development? | IELTS ONESTOP

Sample Answer:

In recent years, it has been observed that children tend to spend more time playing video games instead of participating in outdoor physical activities. While this trend may provide some benefits in terms of entertainment and cognitive skills, I firmly believe that it causes more harm than good.

The most significant problem caused by excessive gaming is the negative impact on children’s health. Spending long hours in front of screens often leads to a sedentary lifestyle, which can result in obesity, poor eyesight, and lack of stamina. For instance, many young people today suffer from posture-related issues because of sitting for prolonged periods. Moreover, limited involvement in outdoor play restricts social interaction, as children fail to develop teamwork, communication, and leadership skills that are usually learned through sports.

Although video games can enhance problem-solving skills and improve hand–eye coordination, the disadvantages clearly outweigh the advantages. Overindulgence in virtual worlds can lead to addiction, which not only affects academic performance but also hampers emotional well-being. In the long run, this may create a generation that is physically unfit and socially disconnected, which is undoubtedly a negative development for both individuals and society.

In conclusion, while playing video games may offer certain mental benefits, prioritizing them over physical activities leads to severe health, social, and psychological problems. Therefore, I strongly believe that this is a negative development, and children should be encouraged to strike a balance between virtual entertainment and real-life physical exercise.
