Sample Answer

Large multinational corporations have become an integral part of the modern economy, influencing how we work, shop, and communicate. While some argue that these businesses contribute positively to global development, others believe they cause more harm than good. This essay will discuss both perspectives before explaining why I believe their impact is generally beneficial, provided they operate responsibly.

On one hand, international companies often bring significant advantages to the countries in which they operate. Firstly, they create employment opportunities, often offering better salaries and working conditions compared to local firms. For example, when a global technology company establishes a branch in a developing nation, it not only employs local talent but also provides training and skills that enhance workforce capabilities. Secondly, multinational corporations encourage innovation and efficiency by introducing advanced technology, modern management techniques, and higher production standards. In addition, they contribute to the global economy by fostering international trade and investment, making products and services more accessible and affordable for consumers worldwide.

On the other hand, critics argue that large corporations can also have detrimental effects. One major concern is that these companies often prioritise profit over social responsibility, leading to exploitation of workers, particularly in poorer countries where labour laws are weak. Moreover, their dominance in the market can drive smaller local businesses out of competition, resulting in a loss of cultural diversity in goods and services. Environmental degradation is another pressing issue; for instance, multinational manufacturing firms may pollute air and water resources, especially in countries with lax environmental regulations.

In my opinion, large international businesses can indeed make the world a better place if their operations are guided by ethical practices and sustainable policies. Governments and international bodies should implement strict regulations to ensure fair wages, environmental protection, and corporate accountability. When managed responsibly, these corporations can serve as engines of economic growth, cultural exchange, and technological progress, while minimising their negative impact.

In conclusion, although multinational corporations have both positive and negative effects, I believe their benefits outweigh their drawbacks when strong regulations are in place. By balancing profit-making with social and environmental responsibility, these companies can play a vital role in making the world a more prosperous and interconnected place.
