In recent years, there has been a growing trend in some countries to demolish historical buildings to make way for residential housing. In my opinion, this is a short-sighted approach that overlooks the cultural, educational, and economic value of heritage sites.
One major reason behind this practice is rapid urbanisation and population growth. In many developing countries, the demand for affordable housing is increasing at an alarming rate, and governments often view historical sites as unproductive land that could be better utilised for housing development. Moreover, maintaining or restoring old buildings is often seen as an expensive and time-consuming task, especially when funds are limited.
However, I strongly believe that historical places should be preserved rather than destroyed. These sites are not only architectural treasures but also serve as powerful reminders of a nation's past. They connect the present generation with their roots and help develop a sense of pride and identity. Replacing them with modern apartments may solve short-term housing problems, but it leads to the permanent loss of irreplaceable heritage.
Instead of destroying such sites, governments should explore alternative solutions, such as vertical housing or building new satellite towns. Additionally, well-preserved heritage sites can boost tourism, which can bring long-term economic benefits far greater than what new housing might generate.
In conclusion, while the need for housing is undeniable, demolishing historical places is not the right solution. A more balanced and sustainable approach should be adopted that respects cultural history while meeting modern needs.
